Excellent --- Robert Weih, professor of Forestry and director of the Spatial Analysis Laboratory in the school of Forest Resources, accepts the Arkansas GIS User’s Forum's Excellent award in recognition of the lab’s "application of geospatial technologies." A vote of the more than 400 GIS professionals from around the state chose the laboratory as the winner.

Nov. 23-25 - Thanksgiving Holiday

Nov. 28 - Window painting will take place between 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the Gibson University Center as part of the Holiday Festival Week activities.

Nov. 28 - "Mock Interviews" from 1-4 p.m. in 200 Harris Hall (Testing Center).

Nov. 28 - Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place in the Gibson University Center Green Room at 5:30 p.m. Prior to the ceremony, dinner will be served at 5 p.m. and is free to students on a UAM meal plan; if visitors wish to eat, the cost is $7.

Nov. 29 - A HAND-ling Hygiene Educational Program will occur from noon - 1:30 p.m. in the U.C. Green Room.

Nov. 30 - A workshop to help choose your major will be held in 200 Harris Hall at 2 p.m.

Honors

The registrar's office appointed Brenda Woodard to the position of assistant registrar to replace Mackie Lowery, who left UAM to assume a position elsewhere. Woodard is a 1985 graduate of UAM with a bacheolor of science in Office Administration. Prior to joining the registrar's staff a few months ago, she had completed almost 20 years in administrative work with Burlington Industries. In her new position, Woodard will be primarily responsible for transfer work evaluation and posting as well as the processing of new student data and withdrawals. lease feel free to call on her when assistance with these matters is needed.

The American Democracy Project-Southern Consortium appointed Ronald Sitton, assistant professor of Journalism, as Arkansas' representative on its council.

The Writing Center
   The Writing Center, located in the Arts and Humanities building, helps UAM students with computer and writing work.
   The Writing Center offers Internet research help and program help for programs such as Microsoft Word.
   The Writing Center helps students with brainstorming ideas for papers. The Web site offers grammar quizzes to help students with grammar.
   The Writing Center opens Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Walk, jog or run your way to a GREAT STUDENT (FACULTY/STAFF) BODY and earn a FREE T-shirt! Walk, jog or run 50, 75 or 100 miles by the end of the Fall semester and be well on your way to having a physically fit, "GREAT" Student Body. Participation is open to all current UAM students, faculty and staff. Mileage must be completed by Dec. 16. Miles completed on treadmills, stairmaster, etc. count toward total miles. (Athletes may NOT count miles completed as part of their practice.) Sign up in the Intramural Office (lower level - University Center). Participants are required to record their weekly mileage on the official chart in the Intramural office.

Meetings

Dec. 1 - The CIS Club meeting in 104 Babin Business Center will include the introduction of new members, the announcement of the book stipend winners and the wrapping of donated toys for the Angel Tree Project.

Dec. 7 - The UAM Assembly will meet Wednesday at 3:20 p.m. in the Spencer Gallery of the Fine Arts Center. If you wish to be placed on the agenda, contact Kate Stewart at stewart@uamont.edu by Tuesday, Nov. 29.

The Alpha Chi Student Honorary conducts regular business meetings for members only during the activity period (12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) on the second Tuesday of each month. 

Baptist Collegiate Ministries serve lunch Wednesdays at noon. First-timers eat free and everyone else eats for $2. Proceeds benefit summer mission trips and other activities.

Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the MBSF Center (near the tennis courts).

DREW COUNTY WRITERS - Drew Country Writers seek new members with a professional attitude and the commitment to publish. Opportunities

Share the joy of reading with the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home for Children this holiday season. The School of Arts and Humanities is beginning its second annual book drive. If you would like to contribute, please bring new or nearly new books appropriate for ages 9 to 18 to the Book Tree in the MCB 112. We will also happily accept cash or checks to buy new books for the children. The books will be delivered Dec. 20. The Student Chapter of American Foresters are currently taking recipe submissions for a cookbook sale to cover travel expenses to professional meetings. Anyone may submit a recipe, and all types of recipes are being accepted. If you are interested in having your favorite homemade treat or meal represented in cookbook please e-mail your recipe to Paul Doruska at doruska@uamont.edu by Nov. 28. The SAF are hoping to begin selling the cookbooks around Dec. 5. Everyone should buy a copy of this cookbook for the person on their Christmas list who loves to cook!

The CIS club (aka Chi Iota Sigma) is collecting non-perishable food items to be donated to the Drew County Food Pantry for Thanksgiving. It's also collecting coats and jackets in good condition. These will go to an area church, which takes care of cleaning and distributing them to the community. Give an hour, save a life! - The Salvation Army Local Service Unit can use an hour of your time "manning" the bucket and ringing an official red-and-white bell to raise funds for emergency assistance in Drew County. UAM student organizations with a service mandate especially are encouraged to call 357-3966 and volunteer to ring the bell. This year's early start responds to everything being previously spent on hurricane relief. For more information, contact Linda Webster, professor of Speech Communication, at webster@uamont.edu.

Planning to graduate in August or December 2006? Fill out and submit a graduation application to the Registrar’s Office, 102 Harris Hall, by March 1, 2006. The Peggy Pickens Nursing Scholarship, sponsored by the Delta Area Community Foundation, will award a student from the Dumas area resident majoring in nursing. Complete application information is available in the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall. Interested students must apply by Dec. 1 for possible spring 2006 consideration.

The AWS Foundation has announced several scholarship opportunities for students studying welding technology, engineering or associated careers. These opportunities exist for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Application deadlines range from Jan. 15 to March 1. Complete details and applications are available at www.aws.org/foundation.

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship program awards 80 $5,000 merit-based scholarships each year to outstanding college students who are Native American or Alaska Native. These students may be majoring in environmental sciences, agriculture, political science, natural resource management, sociology, history, science, business, health, medicine, nursing, economics or any associated field. Additional consideration includes:

  • Current sophomore or juniors;
  • Minimum 3.00 grade point average;
  • U. S. Citizen or permanent resident;
  • Commitment to working with Native Americans after graduation.
  • Meeting the Feb. 1, 2006 submission deadline.

The Arkansas Governor’s Commission on People with Disabilities awards several scholarships each year. Pick up applications in the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall. Deadline for application submission is Feb. 27, 2006. Eligibility for consideration includes:

  1. Completed application;
  2. Documented disability, including completed medical form in the application;
  3. Letter of good standing;
  4. Three letters of recommendation;
  5. Official transcript.

The Newhouse Graduate Newspaper Fellowship and Apprenticeship for Minorities underwrites master's level study at the acclaimed S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University while providing on-the-job training at the Newhouse Newspapers. Two winners per year receive free tuition, monthly stipends of $1,100, health insurance coverage and up to $3,300 in other benefits for 18 months of graduate study. To be eligible for the 2006-2008 competition, a candidate must have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a field other than journalism (with a B average or higher) by June 15, 2006, be a United States citizen and either African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American/Pacific Islander or Native American. To apply, the candidate must submit a complete application for admission to the newspaper track of Syracuse University's master's program in Magazine, Newspaper and On-Line Journalism by Feb. 1, 2006, which requires taking the Graduate Record Examination no later than Jan. 1, 2006. The $65 Syracuse University graduate application fee will be waived for all eligible Newhouse Fellow candidates. Finalize your registration for Spring by Jan. 3, 2006.

  1. Choose Campus Connect from the UAM home page (www.uamont.edu).
  2. Choose New Version of Campus Connect from the Campus Connect page.
  3. Sign in with your student id and pin number. If you do not know your pin number, choose “Help! What’s my Pin?”
  4. From the Student Information option, choose Review/Pay Account.
  5. Choose the current term (Spring).
  6. Your current bill will be displayed. Scroll to the bottom of the page. You will have two of three options:
    • Request contact. If you choose this option you may type in a question and someone from the cashier’s office will contact you with an answer.
    • Finalize Bill Now. This option allows you to finalize your bill ONLY if you have a credit balance. If you choose this option you will NOT need to mail, fax or come to the cashier’s office to sign your bill.
    • Pay by FACTS. This option allows you to finalize your bill by making a payment arrangement or paying in full. If you choose this option you will NOT need to mail, fax or come to the cashier’s office to sign your bill.

Spring break dates listed in the UAM Catalog 2005-07 for spring 2006 and spring 2007 have been corrected in the online catalog to reflect the following: spring 2006, March 20-24 and spring 2007, March 19-23.
