50-year reunion -- Members of the Arkansas A&M College class of 1955 are planning a reunion for homecoming on Oct. 22. Sept. 10 – The cross-country teams will compete Saturday, starting behind the Red Barn. Women run at 9 a.m. and the men begin at 9:30 a.m.

Sept. 10 – The football team hosts North Alabama. Tailgating begins at 3 p.m., followed by the Walk of Champions at 4 p.m. on Stadium Drive and a 6 p.m. kick-off at Willis "Convoy" Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium. Your UAM ID card is you ticket to the game!

Sept. 12 – The weekly coaches’ luncheon will be held Monday at noon at Western Sizzlin' in Monticello. The coaches’ luncheon will be held every Monday through the 2005 season. All luncheons are open to the general public and media.

Sept. 12 – A "Don't Let Test Anxiety Freeze You in Your Tracks" workshop will be held in 201 Harris Hall at 3 p.m.. For more information, contact Laura Hughes at 460-1454 or e-mail hughesl@uamont.edu.

Sept. 14 – An American Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Gibson University Center Green Room. Donors will receive FREE patriotic car magnets and FREE refreshments. Be sure to bring your blood donor card or a picture ID on the day of the Drive. In order to aid in our preparation, we ask that everyone who plans to participate in this blood drive please call Student Health Services at 460-1051 or e-mail Terri Richardson at richardson@uamont.edu to add your name to the list. Sept. 15 - A guest artist recital featuring Naomi Sanchez and Stephen Varney on duo piano will be held in the Fine Arts Center Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the UAM Division of Music at 460-1060.

Sept. 19 - Deadline for "Family of the Year" nominations. Has someone in your family gone that extra mile to help you get into college or stay in college? Show how much you appreciate them! Take a few minutes to compose a short essay describing why your family member(s) deserve this recognition. Nominate your parent(s) or other family members for UAM Parent/Family Appreciation Day "Family of the Year." The selected family will be recognized during the opening program on Parent/Family Appreciation Day on Oct. 1. Complete a nomination form and return it to the Intramural or Student Health offices before 4 p.m., Sept. 19. For more information, contact Julie Gentry at gentry@uamont.edu.

Sept. 27 - Senior nursing students will discuss living with diabetes at a free public presentation from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Spencer Gallery of the Fine Arts Center. The presentation will include a discussion of treatments, medications and special considerations for individuals with type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Carol Dolberry received a promotion to the position of Associate Registrar and Data Management Specialist. Dolberrry began working in the registrar’s office in Fall 2002 as Registrar’s Assistant/Receptionist. In 2004 she was promoted to Graduation/VA Clerk. In her new role, she will take on additional responsibilities in several areas including institutional reporting and a broader range of registrar functions. Dolberry holds a B.A. in Economics from Auburn University. Prior to coming to UAM, Carol was a coordinator in the Graduate Outreach Program at Auburn University in Alabama.

The Arkansas Superior Federal Credit Union sponsored the refreshment tent during Orientation. The following students won door prizes from the Credit Union: Jessie Griffin, Derick Foster, Madelyn Clements, Theresa Cooper, Jessica Tanksley, Shea Dempsey, Erin Descoteaux and Danielle Morris.

Student Activities/Intramurals

Walk, jog or run your way to a GREAT STUDENT (FACULTY/STAFF) BODY
and earn a FREE T-shirt!
Walk, jog or run 50, 75 or 100 miles by the end of the Fall semester and be well on your way to having a physically fit, "GREAT" Student Body. Participation is open to all current UAM students, faculty and staff. Mileage must be completed by Dec. 16. Miles completed on treadmills, stairmaster, etc. count toward total miles. (Athletes may NOT count miles completed as part of their practice.) Sign up in the Intramural Office (lower level - University Center). Participants are required to record their weekly mileage on the official chart in the Intramural office.

Anonymous Alcohol Screenings – UAM faculty, staff and students can take a FREE, anonymous alcohol screening at http://www.mentalhealthscreening.org/screening/loginpage.asp. When asked for a login name, enter UOFAMONTICELLO.

Intramurals

Meetings

Sept. 12 - The NPHC will meet at 7 p.m. in the U.C. Caucus Room for a business meeting.

Sept. 15 - The NAACP will have its first general meeting at 6 p.m. in the U.C. Caucus Room.

Sept. 20  - The Student Activities Board will meet from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the U.C. Capital Room. Any student may join. For more information, contact Robin Barker, director of Student Activities and Programs, at barkerr@uamont.edu.

The Alpha Chi Student Honorary conducts regular business meetings for members only during the activity period (12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) on the second Tuesday of each month. 

The Chi Iota Sigma club meets on the first Thursday of every month at 1 p.m. and is open to all CIS majors and minors. They are currently collecting items for Hurricane Katrina victims who are in Monticello. Thus far, they have donated clothing, toiletries and games.

The Chess Club meets Mondays at 4:30 p.m. in room A-23 of the Science Center.

U.N.I.T.Y meets every Tuesday in 204 Memorial Classroom Building. For more information, call 460-1743.

Hurricane help needed! – A group from Monticello will be traveling to Gulfport, Miss., on the morning of Sept. 12 with a load of food and water to those affected by the hurricane. If you would like to send either of these, please bring your donations to the MBSF center on campus by Sunday afternoon. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Miss Blue and White The Phi Beta Sigma chapter is holding a "Miss Blue and White" contest on Oct 12. Interested individuals should fill out the contestant form by typing in between the lines on the document, then e-mail it back to Phibetasigma@uamont.edu or return it to one of the brothers.

Campus map display in library – Wondering how to find the classes in those buildings which are new to you? Stop by the library and take a look at our "Campus Map Display." With the assistance of a student volunteer and university staff, the library has prepared a map of the campus with pictures of selected buildings. Take a look and orient yourself to your new schedule! The library is also hosting displays of student organizations this semester. The University's U.S. and Arkansas flags will fly at half-mast until Sept. 20 in honor of Chief Justice Rehnquist and in support of the many individuals affected by hurricane Katrina.

An mp3 page has been added to the division of Music Web site, located at http://www.uamont.edu/music/mp3.htm. Featured recordings include the UAM Choir, Musical Theater, UAM Band and Jazz Band, faculty performances and student recitals. Also, there is an excellent recording of the UAM Alma Mater by Dr. Kent Skinner and the UAM Concert Choir.

Tentative refund dates for the Fall 2005 semester:

  • Sept. 14 — Pell Grants and all other aid received between Sept. 5 and Sept. 9
  • Sept. 28 — First disbursement of fall/spring, first-time borrower loans; first disbursement of fall only, first-time borrower loans
  • Oct. 26 — Second disbursement of fall only loans

Planning to graduate in May 2006? Fill out and submit a graduation application to the Registrar’s Office, Harris Hall 102, by Oct. 7. Unsure of when you may be eligible to graduate? See your adviser to review your degree audit.

A group of drinkers in their 20s seemed to lose the urge to binge drink when they took pills made from kudzu, that ubiquitous vine that blankets the South, researchers reported. The finding might one day lead to a way to attack the binge-drinking problem. Researcher Scott Lukas, with Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital, had no trouble finding volunteers for the study, which required them to hang out in an "apartment," complete with television, recliner and fridge stocked with beer.
