Dear Ask Nancy: I think that the bookstore does need to get more of a variety of items to choose from, and magazines might be something to pick. But then again, if these magazines are going to have such a considerable markup like other items in the store then I do not think they will sell as well. I understand that the bookstore has to make money in order to stay in business, but making money and having way over-priced items are two different things. I am sorry. I did not write this e-mail to complain; I wrote it to give my comments and suggestions, but I got a little off track. Also if the bookstore stayed open later I believe that would help as well. I know that I only have classes on Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. By the time I get out of lab, the bookstore has closed. I also work in McGehee all day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If the bookstore could stay open later, I could come out to the college after work, or even stop by after lab. Another thing is the bookstore might could get a business or marketing major to do some studies as a class project to see which items sell and which do not. I believe that if the bookstore had more student/faculty/shopper input, then it would be more lucrative. Also if the bookstore would lower some of the prices or have more sales that might would help as well. I am not talking about the 14 percent off short-sleeve T-Shirt sale on Monday through Friday between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. either. A sale on something that people would actually want to buy or something they need. The key to a real business is not to try and make all your profit on the sale of one item, but on many items. Thanks for allowing me to give my input. Chris Simpson p.s.- I know that you are just the commentary editor the Voice, but I think you are on to something here. I realize that this letter was really written to be read by the bookstore, so can you pass it along to the appropriate person's) after you use it. Thanks again. Great story! Enjoyed your Kerry cartoon. Hopefully we can have one of President Bush as well. I am interested to what extent the e-mail problem is affecting students. Can the Voice conduct an informal poll on this? Also, since the presidential race appears so close in Arkansas, what about an informal UAM poll on this? Thanks and y’all are doing a great job! J Nordeen Russell Editor's Note: See the Bush cartoon here. A non-scientific poll conducted in February 2004 asked the question "Who would you vote for as the next President of the United States?"
