Over 690 people attended Family Appreciation Day, held Sept. 25 at the University Center.

Activities began with the Cotton Blossoms softball and Boll Weevil baseball scrimmage games. The University Center featured booths for the academic departments to display information and materials for families. Along with the academic departments, Student Services organized family photo buttons to be given away.

The University named Juanita Rhea Posey of Dumas as the UAM Family of the Year. Senior Margaret Robin Posey McTigrit nominated her mother. Posey is also a UAM student.  Chancellor Jack Lassiter presented her with a plaque during the reception in the University Center.

Over 16 sorority and fraternity members as well as the cheerleaders and residence life staff helped throughout the day.  Extra effort from the maintenance, grounds and custodial staff prepared the campus for the event.

“This event could not have happened without two very special people, co-chairpersons Terri Richardson and Julie Gentry,” Lassiter said.

Chancellor and Mrs. Lassiter once again sponsored the tailgate cookout and thanks to Aramark Food Services, parents enjoyed a meal before the game. Over 20 tents sat around the pond to tailgate along with the chancellor’s tent.

“The entire committee did an outstanding job in the organization of this event and we welcome suggestions for next year’s event,” Gentry said.

Committee members also included Clay Brown, Betty Matthews, Laura Hughes, Renea Thompson and Ashley Lynn.
