Students from Spanish 4663 and volunteer students from Spanish 1003 will perform the play “Los Ilegales” Saturday, April 30 at 5 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theater.
The play, which will be open to University of Arkansas at Monticello students as well as the community in general, will present the issues that force Mexican people to migrate to the United States as well as the plights they face before, during and after their migration.
“Los Ilegales” is based on a true story, and will encourage the audience to look at the immigration issue from the immigrants standpoint.
“We are very excited about our project because of the exposure our school will get and the knowledge our students are achieving, ” said Francisco Moreno, assistant professor of Spanish and French. “They are improving all aspects of the Spanish language: speaking, listening, reading, writing and knowledge of the Mexican Culture that impacts our local community.”
Students will be involved in all aspects of the production including wardrobe, set design and makeup.
“Working on the play so far has been very interesting,” said Spanish student Jennifer Van Dee. “I’m really excited to see how it turns out.”
The play will be presented in Spanish with some scenes in English. It contains adult language and content.
