Rodeo Team faces fierce competition

   Heading into the College National Finals this summer, University of Arkansas at Monticello’s Rodeo Team faces yet another thrilling competition this weekend, March 31- April 2, 7:30 p.m. at Hestand Stadium in Pine Bluff.

   Schools scheduled to compete include UAM, Abraham Baldwin College of Tifton, Ga., Arkansas State, ASU-Beebe, Arkansas Tech, Dyersburg (Tenn.) State, East Central (Miss.) Community College, Faulkner State (Ala.) Community College, Mississippi State, Missouri Valley College, Murray (Ky.) State, Northwest Mississippi Community College, Southern Arkansas, Southwest Missouri State, Troy, Tennessee-Martin and West Alabama.  

   The Rodeo Team consists of 18 members, including two of the nation's highest-ranking members, Cody James of Monticello, first place in Calf Roping, and Laura Kennedy of Quitman, second place in Breakaway Roping.

   Girl’s events this Saturday include Breakaway, Goat Tying, Barrel Racing, Calf Roping and Steer Wrestling.

   Boy’s events include Team Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Calf Roping and Steer Wrestling.

   Coach Jolyn Wells said the Rodeo Team, established seven years ago, competes in 10 regular rodeos per season, five in the fall and five in the spring.

   The top three team members in their events and the top two teams plan to attend this summer's College National Finals in Casper, Wyo.
