It is a good time to be a mathematician, a scientist, or an engineer

Abstract. This talk will first give a physical explanation of some key mathematical concepts, such as the surface integral of a vector field. These concepts will then be used to explain some fundamental differential equations of physics, such as the Poisson equation and the heat equation. Subsequently we will discuss how these equations are used to model real life phenomena in research at Louisiana Tech University. Independent of the obvious connection to research that the speaker is more or less familiar with, the variety of applications should shine a very positive light on the wide applicability of fundamental mathematics and science. It is a good time to work in these areas. Individuals familiar with calculus should find this talk understandable and informative in its entirety. Technical details will not be needed for the philosophy, the motivations, the connections to science and especially not for the jokes.
