UAM Biology Professors Featured at ScienceDirect and BBC Websites

The Fawleys

An article written by Dr. Karen Fawley and Dr. Marvin Fawley and entitled "Observations on the Diversity and Ecology of Freshwater Nannochloropsis (Eustigmatophyceae), with Descriptions of New Taxa" (Protist, Volume 158, Issue 3, July 2007, Pages 325-336) has been featured by ScienceDirect as one
of the 25 Hottest Articles published in the Journal, Protist. Information about this article and the top 25 most downloaded papers of this prestigious journal can be found here. Another article coauthored by Dr. Marvin Fawley: "An Unrecognized Ancient Lineage of Green Plants Persists in Deep Marine Waters," published in the Journal of Phycology has been featured on the BBC EARTH NEWS website. The note "Ancient seaweed is living fossil" reports that scientists have found that ancient seaweed growing in the deep sea are "living fossils". This paper has also been featured by AnswersInGenesis in a note entitled: "Great sea depths have been hiding an ancient creature. Is it Leviathan?"

Two new faculty join the School of Math and Sciences

Two New Faculty

The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences is happy to welcome two new faculty members this year:
Dr. Mary J. Stewart will join us as an Assistant Professor of Biology starting this August. She received her Doctorate in Biology from Kansas State University. Dr. Stewart will be teaching Genetics, Microbiology, and their respective labs during the Fall 2008 Semester. She has 11 years experience in teaching biology. She will be moving to Monticello from Moorhead, Minnesota, where she was an Adjunct Biology Instructor for Minnesota State Community and Technical College.
Mrs. Victoria Ryburn will join us as an Instructor of Mathematics starting this August. She received her Master of Science in Mathematics from University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Mrs. Ryburn will be teaching Intro and College Algebra courses during the Fall 2008 Semester. Mrs. Ryburn will be relocating to the Monticello area from Fayetteville, where she was working on her Master’s degree as well as being a teaching assistant at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

UAM / ERZ High School Redesign

Three New Faculty

The UAM/ERZ (Education Renewal Zone) is planning their first Summer Science Camp June 9-12, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. each day, with lunch in the cafeteria at no cost to the participants. The camp is inviting top students from some of the school districts in the area, as well as one or two teachers from each of those schools. The teachers will be there to learn and also to provide help for you during the activities. The university is planning activities in different areas of science like: genetics, chemistry, energy, biology, geology, and optics. You can see the pictures at this link.

UAM Biomedical Research Faculty Member Receives $18,900 Arkansas INBRE Grant

The Fawleys

Dr. Marvin Fawley, assistant dean of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, and Dr. Karen Fawley, assistant professor of biology, at UAM have been awarded an $18,900 grant from the Arkansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) to enhance research and classroom teaching in biomedical education at our School. The grant was awarded to purchase equipment to be used in laboratory courses in molecular biology and cell biology as well as microbiology, genetics, and biochemistry labs.

Dr. Morris Bramlett Named as the New Dean of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences

Dr. Morris Bramlett

Dr. Morris Bramlett, professor of chemistry and a member of the University of Arkansas at Monticello faculty for 16 years, has been named dean of the UAM School of Mathematical and Natural Science. Bramlett replaces Dr. John Annulis, who retired in May after 35 years on the UAM faculty and nine years as dean of math and science.
