The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences is happy to welcome two new faculty members
this year:
Dr. Mary J. Stewart will join us as an Assistant Professor of Biology starting this August. She
received her Doctorate in Biology from Kansas State University. Dr. Stewart will be teaching Genetics,
Microbiology, and their respective labs during the Fall 2008 Semester. She has 11 years experience in
teaching biology. She will be moving to Monticello from Moorhead, Minnesota, where she was an Adjunct
Biology Instructor for Minnesota State Community and Technical College.
Mrs. Victoria Ryburn will join us as an Instructor of Mathematics starting this August. She received
her Master of Science in Mathematics from University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Mrs. Ryburn will be
teaching Intro and College Algebra courses during the Fall 2008 Semester. Mrs. Ryburn will be relocating
to the Monticello area from Fayetteville, where she was working on her Master’s degree as well as being
a teaching assistant at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
The UAM/ERZ (Education Renewal Zone) is planning their first Summer Science Camp June 9-12, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. each day, with lunch in the cafeteria at no cost to the participants. The camp is inviting top students from some of the school districts in the area, as well as one or two teachers from each of those schools. The teachers will be there to learn and also to provide help for you during the activities. The university is planning activities in different areas of science like: genetics, chemistry, energy, biology, geology, and optics. You can see the pictures at this link.
Dr. Marvin Fawley, assistant dean of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, and Dr. Karen Fawley, assistant professor of biology, at UAM have been awarded an $18,900 grant from the Arkansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) to enhance research and classroom teaching in biomedical education at our School. The grant was awarded to purchase equipment to be used in laboratory courses in molecular biology and cell biology as well as microbiology, genetics, and biochemistry labs.
This fall, our School has three new instructors in the areas of chemistry and biology: Dr. Martha Baskett, Dr. Jinming Huang, and Dr. Glenn Manning. Welcome!
Dr. Morris Bramlett, professor of chemistry and a member of the University of Arkansas at Monticello faculty for 16 years, has been named dean of the UAM School of Mathematical and Natural Science. Bramlett replaces Dr. John Annulis, who retired in May after 35 years on the UAM faculty and nine years as dean of math and science.
