Greetings from the Dean |
![]() Greetings! Welcome to the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences website. The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences is located in the Science Center and the adjacent Turner Neal Museum of Natural History. The School currently has 21 faculty members that are devoted to providing excellent classroom and laboratory instruction as well as outstanding field experiences and undergraduate research opportunities. The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences offers majors in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Natural Sciences. The School offers minors in the areas listed above and also Physics. The School works closely with Forest Resources, Nursing, Agriculture, and Education in providing support courses for those majors in addition to providing the general education math and science courses required for all degrees. Majoring in a math or science field is not an easy path; however, you will have easy access to faculty members and tutors if you need additional help. The faculty members take pride in the level of success that our students achieve. A large number of our majors have chosen to enter graduate or professional programs to continue their education. Of the students that complete our curriculum, we have a very high acceptance rate into medical, pharmacy, allied health, and graduate programs. Others have been very successful at positions in industry, jobs with government agencies, and in education. The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences has a well-funded private scholarship program, thanks to our gracious alumni, which provides scholarships for many of our junior and senior level majors. At this time, essentially most of our junior and senior, and even some sophomore, math and science majors with a 3.4 GPA or better are receiving private scholarships from the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences. If you are considering a career in one of the math or science related areas, I'm certain that you will enjoy the friendly learning atmosphere in the School of Math and Sciences at UAM. You will work closely with an academic advisor that will help you set up a course sequence that best allows you to reach your goals. It is not uncommon for our faculty to contact professional and graduate schools in other states to design a course curriculum specifically for a student wanting to enter that institution upon graduation from UAM. Since classes are small, you will form lifetime bonds with your fellow classmates and the faculty members. You will have opportunities to take field trips, be involved with professional clubs and organizations, participate in undergraduate research, attend professional meetings, and be involved with several fun extra-curricular activities with other students and faculty members.
