Week 2

  • Read Designer's Handbook Chap. 1 - Fundamentals
  • Brainstorm: Explore all possible content angles for the story idea
  • Adapting spread themes across sections
  • Homework: Bring magazines of design you like
Week 3
  • Read Designer's Handbook Chap. 2 - Story Design
  • Brainstorm: Explore all possible content angles for the story idea
  • Homework: Schedule interviews, needed photographs, work on photo assignment #1

Week 4

  • Read Designer's Handbook Chap. 3 - Page Design
  • Brainstorm: Explore all possible content angles for the story idea
  • Elemental contributions: Copy, Headlines
    Collect research  Preparing for and conducting one-on-one interviews  
    Tactics for taking notes  Organize notes w/ highlighters, sticky pads
  • Homework: Schedule interviews, needed photographs, work on photo assignment #2

Editors: Assign photo assignment #1; spread assignments; section front copy
Staff:  Using headlines, copy and photos, complete spread #1, submit to editors; submit photo assignment #1, with captions


Week 5

  • Read Designer's Handbook Chap. 4 - Photos and Art
  • Brainstorm: Explore all possible content angles for the story idea
  • Elemental contributions: Submission to Yearbook plant, cropping photos
  • Elemental contributions: Photos, captions
  • Homework: Schedule interviews, needed photographs, work on photo assignment #3
Editors: Section front copy; Assign photo assignment #2; edit spread #1, submit to publication committee
Staff:  Complete spreads #2-3, submit to editors; submit photo assignment #2, with captions    

All submissions must be approved by both editors and publication committee prior to plant submission

Week 6

  • Read Designer's Handbook Chap. 6 - Graphics and Sidebars
  • Brainstorm: Explore all possible content angles for the story idea
  • Ethical and Legal guidelines
  • Homework: Schedule interviews, needed photographs, work on photo assignment #4
Editors: Section front copy; edit spreads #2-3, submit to publication committee
Staff:  Complete spreads #4-5, submit to editors; fix returned spreads; submit photo assignment #3, with captions   

All submissions must be approved by both editors and publication committee prior to plant submission

Week 7

  • Read Designer's Handbook Chap. 7 - Special effects
  • Brainstorm: Explore all possible content angles for the story idea
  • Homework: Schedule interviews, needed photographs, work on photo assignment #5
Editors: Section front copy; edit spreads #4-5, submit to publication committee
Staff:  Complete spreads #6-7, submit to editors; fix returned spreads ; submit photo assignment #4, with captions

Week 8

  • Brainstorm: Explore all possible content angles for the story idea

Staff:  Complete spreads #8-9, submit to editors; fix returned spreads ; submit photo assignment #5, with captions

Week 9  - Midterm

Weeks 10-15

Walsworth Deadlines: Submit 72 pages by March 26; 52 pages by April 23; 52 pages by May 12
(NOTE: Commencement spread should be finished after the May 15th graduation.)

Week 16  - Final

Three-page assessment due Tuesday at 5 p.m. See syllabus for details.
