Beginning writers often lack supporting details for the lead. They also write in generalities rather than specifics. Yet with the following ingredients, you can improve your writing.
- Use simple sentences
- Achieve rhythm (by varying sentence length)
- Use simple and correct words
- Write with conviction
- Use quotes to strengthen your story
- Show (describe smell, feel, taste and sight), then tell the reader
- Provide specifics
- Use appropriate style for the event
- Listen to your words
- Avoid errors (muddy thinking=mistakes)
- Use balance and fairness
- Use integrity
- Be complete
- Be dependable
- Persevere in reporting
- Be skeptical, curious
- Verify sources and quotes
- Write clearly
- Write correctly
- Use creativity and ingenuity
