Intro to Mass Communication

They said it ...

The following quotes came from student evaluations of the Mass Comm course.

"Great class!! Although the class is demanding, all assignments and class discussions have been interesting."

"I absolutely love the way this class is taught. We are given information from the book, Internet, etc and make a decision about how we feel about it on our own. Class discussion is welcomed. Having a different opinion is seen as a good thing. This is one of the few classes that actually has interaction. We don't just have to sit here and stared at a teacher and a chalkboard. I have absolutely no complaints. The media journals are interesting and give you insight into personal acts. I would not change anything."

"When I signed up for this class, I had no idea it would interest me this much. I learned a lot and really enjoyed this class overall."

"Dr. Sitton is very funny, but intelligent. He is crazy, but I would not take another teacher for Mass Comm."

"I have learned a lot from taking this class. It has been very helpful in understanding the different types of media we are using."

"Dr. Sitton has greatly improved my sentiments toward school. I am used to biology and chemistry courses which are extremely boring and nearly impossible to sit through. He found a way to make a class not only bearable, but interesting."

"I enjoy this class a lot. I was surprised in all the stuff I learned about newspapers, films, magazines, etc."

"While I have thoroughly enjoyed the course, there are a few items to be addressed. The class is quite interesting and I think you should allow for more class discussion because these are things we would directly know about and are interested in."

"Sitton is one wild and crazy cat. But he knows his stuff when it comes to the media. I've told all of my buddies about this class and how interesting it is. Cheers."

"Dr. Sitton was great. I really enjoyed the class."

"My opinion is that Dr. Sitton is a top-notch instructor. He makes class fun and exciting. He's extremely knowledgeable in his field and is very well-rounded. The class is great and the assignments are fun. Dr. Sitton always helps his students immensely."

"I always enjoy my speech classes. I hope to someday work in the broadcast field and this class & professor gave me a great inlook to these areas. Dr. Sitton is a very thorough professor who knows his teachings VERY well."

"Dr. Sitton was a great instructor. He allowed students to ask questions and to comment freely on the subject matter at any time. This helped me to learn a great deal more about whatever it was he was teaching. Also, making extra credit available helped my grade dramatically. Not only was there extra credit assignments on the syllabus, but also activities throughout the semester! The activities not only related to class but helped with campus involvement. All in all, Dr. Sitton was FABULOUS!"

"The class gives you a detailed overview of the various types of media that affect your life. Whether the class is required or an elective, the lessons are important and relevant. The course's only fault lies in the length of Media Journal II. Three weeks is too long for students who primarily do something week after week."

"I really enjoyed this class. It taught me a lot about the effects of mass media. Dr. Sitton was always willing to work with the students. The assignments help you realize how much media we consume."

"I enjoyed the class with all of the different journal entries."

"I loved this class. I really enjoyed it. Dr. Sitton is great. Though how exactly it is relevant to speech I don't know. I had a lot of fun and hope to take Dr. Sitton again."

"The class was pretty good. Even though it was a required class, I enjoyed it because he made it interesting. The only problem was 8 a.m. I'm not a morning person."

"I really enjoyed this class. Not a class to blow off, you have to study. But the information  is things that are very interesting. Dr. Sitton does a great job with this class and is a very understanding teacher."

Introduction to Journalism

They said it ...

The following quotes came from student evaluations of the Introduction to Journalism course.

"This is a good course for writers wanting to learn how to write with purpose and get to the heart of a story. I truly enjoyed it, just not the deadlines."

"Intro to Journalism is a time-consuming class. You have to be able to put in the hours. It's fun, yes; but you can't slack EVER until the final week."

"This is the best class I have ever taken. The teacher was very professional and improved my writing tremendously. The class has enhanced my interest in journalism."

"Before I took this class I had a great desire to pursue journalism; however, now I cannot wait until it is over. I felt as if we were thrown into journalism. I think there should be a pre-req class that teaches AP Style writing before you take any further journalism classes."

"The course is well taught and the teacher does a great job."

"Dr. Sitton pushes his students to improve and 'make new mistakes.' Sometimes the work load is a bit heavy, but I've learned a lot about writing. By learning to step up and improve, I have been forced to become a more aware and clear writer. Good job."

"Great at 'getting back' with us on e-mail. Expects a lot, but explains a lot! I enjoyed the course!"

"Dr. Sitton is an excellent teacher. His down-to-earth attitude and sense of humor makes this class interesting and fun. He is very understanding of scheduling problems and seems compassionate about his students and their education. I look forward to having him again as a teacher."

"This is a very stressful class. I don't think that it should be available to first-time freshman; it is just to much for them to take on. Everything in the class was well organized."

"Dr. Sitton is an excellent example of a professor. He goes above and beyond for his students. The class is enjoyable and I've learned a tremendous amount! When I first went into the class on the first day, I cried. I was terrified of the course at first, but as it passed, slowly I became comfortable and more confident thanks to Dr. Sitton."

"Dr. Sitton has made this semester enjoyable. He cares so much about us. Unlike a lot of professors here, he's very approachable and works with us. At the beginning of the semester, I thought I would drop it before the end of the semester, but I'm still here and loving it. Dr. Sitton expects a lot out of his students. I love that about him because it makes me a better student."

"Sitton is a kick-ass teacher. He really cares about the subject he teaches as well as the students. He helps me out a lot. Keep it up, (Dr.) Opie!"

"Really enjoyed stress related to this class. I've learned a lot from Sitton, who has his own way of getting the message across. I'm excited about other opportunities to learn under his teaching."

"The class is demanding and stressful but along with learning to be a better writer, you learn to manage your time better."

"I think Dr. Sitton is an excellent teacher and a master of journalism. I believe he is a great asset to UAM. It's hard to find great teachers like Sitton. I suggest to UAM to keep him around for the long haul."

Newswriting

They said it ...

The following quotes came from student evaluations of the Newswriting course.

"I would never recommend someone take this course and another writing intensive course at the same time. Though the schedule's not too hard, adding a break between a couple of articles would be nice, especially around the Enterprise."

"I have learned a lot during the duration of this course."

"Hard class, but very informative. Dr. Sitton is really great about working with students."

"The class is very organized. Dr. Sitton's style of teaching helps any student become a great journalist. Dr. Sitton shows us the basics of writing and how to do a great news story. He also shows us that may people out there aren't going to like what you write as a journalist. To be a journalist you have to stand up for what you believe. Overall I think this is an excellent class that was taught on a higher level.

"Dr. Sitton is a great instructor and the course itself is fun but there is a lot of work and it moves really fast."

"My only complaint is the course did not meet often enough. Twice a week is not nearly enough. This is a great class. I cannot recommend this course and professor too highly."

Student Publications

They said it ...

The following quotes came from student evaluations of the Journalism Lab.

"This course has opened my eyes to a lot that I hadn't been experienced to. I have taken those experiences and applied them to the work assigned in the course. The course offers essential material for the journalism field."

"Dr. Sitton has challenged my growth, with "tough love" yet patience and compassion. I appreciate him giving me a chance and the guidance he has provided in so many areas. However, I do not like not having specific feedbacks to help improve, issue to issue, and to allow me to know my grade. Thank you, Dr. Sitton. (Dr. Sitton cares about the whole person -- not just the class work. He gets on a personal level with each student and fosters cohesion)."

"It's all good! I've really enjoyed this class, although it is very time consuming. I can't think of anything that needs to be changed."

"The lab is really where I've obtained most of my knowledge and experience towards journalism. Sitton does a good job of letting us run The Voice how we choose."

"Journalism lab has allowed me the wonderful opportunity of experiencing what it's like to work on a newspaper. Dr. Sitton does a great job of helping the paper and giving it a professional feel."

"I think this class is a very good addition to the curriculum at UAM. Dr. Sitton is a very strong person to be in the position he is in. He shows much concern and care for the class, The Voice, and the students. If I had to take him for all of my classes, I would. He is a fair and very unselfish teacher and I applaud him."

"He needs to read the stories himself more thoroughly before editing to show his freshmen where they need to improve. He also needs to put Todd on a very short and tight leash before he pisses off someone he shouldn't and the university takes the blame."

"Dr. Sitton is a great teacher. I love the class. He relates well to the students."

"There's a news story in everything, so search deeper. That's something I learned this semester."

"Dr. Sitton brings a 'Real World' approach to all classes and allows you to see first-hand how a real news room operates. After visiting a conference and interacting with students from other schools, it really opened my eyes to what he was teaching, such as passive voice in newspaper (writing)."

"Journalism lab provides an experience unlike no others. Students taking lab learn about publication and get a taste of how a newspaper works as an organization."

"This course provides excellent hands-on experience in the journalism field. You will become more familiar with interviewing, writing, photography and Web-based publishing. All journalism students should take advantage of this course."

"Dr. Sitton is an excellent teacher; less textbooks, more hands-on activities. Dr. Sitton embodies what a real teacher is supposed to be."

"This class is probably the most influential I've taken, even though I'm not enrolled in the class this semester. I am still learning. The experience gained in the lab has bettered my effectiveness in the Intro (to Journalism) class."
