STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY AND PRINCIPLES

VISION

The School of Computer Information Systems strives to be the best stand-alone Computer Information Systems program both nationally and regionally by providing undergraduates with a sought-after professional education in applied information systems while maintaining a supportive encouraging learning environment. The School provides and will continue to provide innovative instruction in programming languages, database management systems, and technical operations with state-of-the-art general and specialty laboratories and an industry-experienced faculty who utilize the most current developer tools in realistic workplace environments.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the School of Computer Information Systems is to support the mission of the University of Arkansas at Monticello by focusing on the undergraduate educational needs of computer information system students in southeast Arkansas and the region. The Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems is designed to prepare students to assume dynamic roles as analysts and designers who will provide the professional insight required for building the information systems of the future.

SCOPE

The Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems is designed to prepare students to assume dynamic roles as analysts and designers who will provide the professional insight required for building the information systems of the future. a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems, a minor in Computer Information Systems, and an Advanced Certificate in Computer Information Systems for post-baccalaureates in other discipline are offered.

ROLE

The School is governed by the university's accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.

GOAL

The goal of our program in computer information systems is to advance the development of those intellectual, personal, and professional attributes that prepare students to shape the complex computer software environment of the future. Graduates are prepared to begin careers as computer programmers, rapidly progress to system analysis responsibilities, and ultimately to positions in management of information systems. Students augment their computer information systems learning with selected corses in business and communication. This comprehensive program allows graduates to confidently advance in the complex business environment of the future.

OBJECTIVES

Special Note: The School of Computer Information Systems incorporates training on compliance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (29 U.S.C. 794d). Subsection 508(a)(1), as amended by the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, Public Law 105-220, in all courses for which the regulations apply. These regulations outline the requirements for developing productivity applications and World Wide Web information access compatible for use by Americans with disabilities.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

1. To educate baccalaureate-level professionals in computer information systems with both the professional competence and diversity of background to assume positions with a variety of information management organizations, such as private industry, educational institutions, and public agencies.
2. To provide an educational and professional basis for successful work performance and for assuming increasing administrative and managerial responsibilities.
3. To provide students the option of a minor in computer information systems.
4. To provide post-baccalaureate students in other academic disciplines the opportunity to develop and enhance computer information systems competence for career development by completing an advanced certificate in computer information systems.
5. To provide students the opportunity to acquire professional and academic competence in computer information systems necessary to be nationally competitive in graduate studies.
6. To foster general education, a professional curriculum, and a collegiate environment that attracts and retains academically strong and professionally motivated students.
7. To promote an educational environment in which a strong orientation toward academic performance is encouraged, and where dedication to the profession and its ethics is developed.

PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVES

1. To contribute to the computer information systems knowledge base by supporting basic, applied and pedagogical research, conference presentations, and publications.
2. To serve as a knowledge base on computer information systems for area organizations.
3. To support consulting services on computer information systems issues to requesting organizations in the local area and the region.
4. To maintain a program of public service by offering workshops and continuing education on computer information systems topics to requesting organizations.
5. To maintain a strong internship program that assists organizations by providing competent students for the accomplishment of specialized or short-term computer information systems tasks.
