Modern Language Program

Modern LanguagesDid you know that Spanish is spoken by approximately 500 million people across Central and South America, parts of Europe, and increasingly in the United States? Likewise, French boasts nearly 270 million speakers in over 29 countries across Europe, Africa, and in Canada, Haiti and the U.S. Certainly these languages are prominent in our part of the world and continue to grow with more and more people every day. Whether studying foreign languages as a major or adding a minor in a foreign language, the University of Arkansas-Monticello provides ever-growing opportunities for students to apply themselves beyond the English-speaking world by means of the Modern Languages Degree.

Students who complete a major in Modern Languages or a minor in a particular foreign language should:

  1. Understand the spoken language(s), particularly where context strongly supports understanding and speech is clearly audible.
  2. Respond to spoken questions and statements.
  3. Understand the written language(s) as used in practical daily life involving learned vocabulary.
  4. Write the language(s) as used in practical daily life involving learned vocabulary.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of important aspects of contemporary cultures.

MAJOR IN MODERN LANGUAGES

The major in Modern Languages is a recent addition to UAM’s fields of study for students wishing to pursue a career in foreign languages. Instructing students in the use of two of the most common Romance languages, the major offers a wide variety of courses in Spanish and French as well as supportive courses in Latin, Japanese and German. In each course students better grasp all aspects of the language: speaking, listening, reading, writing, and culture. The Modern Languages major offers three different options of study:

  1. Balanced Spanish and French
  2. Spanish focus with French complement
  3. French focus with Spanish complement

MINOR IN SPANISH OR FRENCH

A minor in Spanish or French is an excellent supplement to any field of study, as the need to use foreign languages becomes increasingly more prevalent. The minor consists of 18 hours of various language related courses. A student can only have a minor in Spanish or French if they have a major other than Modern Languages.
